Papilio amathea (Linnaeus, 1758)

Five species of Anartia are described in the Neotropical region (Lamas, 2004). Anartia amathea, occurs in varied environments throughout Brazil and neighboring countries. This is one of the most common and always very distinguished despite shows strong red color.

Their habitat includes wetlands humid, and in these environments  is where will find plants for the caterpillars. Their eggs are laid on the leaves of plants in the family Acanthaceae, some species of semi-aquatic plants. Their caterpillars are black and with thorns (Otero & Marigo, 1990).

The adults feed on nectar.
