Papilionidae
The family Papilionidae contains large and colorful butterflies. Their common name swallowtails refers to the tail-like hindwing appendices found in many, but not all species. More than 500 species are known, the majority from the tropics.
The family comprises the subfamilies Parnasiinae, Baroniinae e Papilioninae, the last with 140 species in the Neotropics (Lamas, 2004).
